What is being branded as a revolution in spiritual accessibility is increasingly looking like a "faith-based AI gold rush,” one that prioritizes aggressive monetization and "synthetic intimacy" over theological integrity or user well-being.
For ethical leaders, the business models behind many religious AI platforms serve as a cautionary tale of profit over people. Critics have identified a predatory shift in how spiritual guidance is delivered. Rather than acting as a non-profit extension of a ministry, many of these apps function as high-pressure sales funnels.
The financial stakes are significant. For example:
Pay-per-minute guidance: Platforms like Just Like Me have been known to charge users up to $1.99 per minute for video interactions with an AI-generated Jesus avatar.
Subscription Tiers: Companies are offering "package deals," such as $49.99 for 45 minutes of monthly access to digital deities.
Aggressive Upselling: Perhaps most concerning is the use of AI to actively solicit upgrades. Reports have surfaced of digital avatars encouraging users to "unlock" premium versions of the “savior” during moments of prayer or reflection; a tactic reminiscent of the most criticized era of televangelism.
The "Race to Intimacy" and Synthetic Relationships
Beyond the price tag lies a more complex psychological issue: the "race to intimacy." Developers are incentivized to design AI that mimics human emotion and language so effectively that users form deep emotional attachments.
This "synthetic intimacy" creates a dangerous feedback loop.
